There are few other cities – none, in fact – where you can kayak and raft on class III and IV rapids in an urban setting. Richmond is the only place in the country where you can run the rapids, then pull out and walk to a downtown brewery, bar or restaurant. Or, check out Belle Isle, the city’s downtown island hangout with rocks perfect for picnicking, and refreshing waters for wading and swimming. The James River Park system has single track trails, and awesome sites like the 1883 Victorian Gothic Pump House and downtown’s Manchester Climbing Wall. The North Bank and Buttermilk (a Best Urban Trail) are perfect for hiking, running and mountain biking.
